The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) governs professional women’s tennis but has significantly less financial backing than the men’s tennis association, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). In 2024, the WTA partnered with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), granting it naming rights for select tournaments, sponsorship of tour rankings, and the risk to host the WTA finals, the most prestigious tournament of the WTA Tour, in Saudi Arabia for 3 years. While countries like the Czech Republic and Mexico also bidded to host, their financial offers were less competitive.
